Not enough progress, but fortunately not much digression either.

I did get the EGD done this week, the stomach probe. I won't know the results on that until I see the stomach that did the gastric bypass, on July 16th. Then I will find out if my stomach is indeed stretched out larger than it should be at this point, and / or, if it's all in my eating habits (grazing all day, etc.).

Until then, I will continue to exercise, and eat carefully, and hopefully, eat less.

Visited Stomach Doctor last Friday. His conclusion from the Upper GI is that my pouch has not expanded. How then can I eat so much more ? He says I am "grazing". Eating little bits all day long. That is true, to some extent, but I can also eat a lot at one sitting, at times.

I know from recent experience that I can go to the Pizza Hut buffet and have salad, 3 pieces of pizza, some rigatoni, and 1 piece of dessert pizza, all within about 30 minutes. That does not sound like my pouch is still small to me.

I looked up The Biggest Loser website. I even Emailed them, about possibly enrolling. The earliest opening they have at their main facility in Utah is in January 2011. Their other location in Malibu, CA has an opening in late September of this year. I am considering going there for 2 weeks. Not definite yet, but my goal would be to lose what I can before then, so that those two weeks help me to trim up more, and tone up more. Then look into the body lift.

Their literature does mention that their daily meals combined are 1200 calories. No wonder I have gained lately. I was aiming for probably twice that daily caloric intake, without any junk food. So for now, I will re-aim my goals, and see what revising my plan can do on my own, though if I want to enroll for Malibu, I'd have to decide something quick to get that time slot.

Appointment this coming Friday to see what the stomach Doc says about my Upper GI. Also what he thinks of me doing the ROSE procedure.

Stress is less. Got the loan last week to make some payoffs, so that helps a lot. Finally re-starting the lake cabin project, so that should be finished in 2 - 3 months.

Had a great trip up north Friday, and it just keeps getting better.

Busy weekend, but still not a good excuse. Thought I exercised and ate enough to have some success, and not this step backwards.

Did go see my stomach doctor last Thursday. He is having me do an upper GI this coming Wednesday, to determine if I am having a problem with the "new stomach" or such. I did ask him about the new "tweaking" procedure, where they can go in and tighten up the "new stomach" again, etc. He says it's still not clear if it really helps or not, and it's expensive. The tool they use is a one-time use tool, so you buy it, and it's tossed. I'm sure that's largely for health reasons, and that's fine.

I return to the stomach doc Friday, June 4th, and should have a better diagnosis at that point.
Meanwhile, I need to see what I can do on my own.

Well, what I'm doing is maintaining, but not reducing. Yeah, I've added more muscle along the way, but the fat % and BMI make it clear I'm not losing the fat like I should be. I need to change my eating habits. Get away from those protein bars, etc. They have more fat than I realized at first. Time for a change.

While it bothers me when the fat percentage goes up, as long as the weight loss is more than the fat percentage gain, I'm coming out ahead. I hope. Obviously, as I lose weight, there is less of me to measure against the fat to calculate a percentage. So any weight loss and / or muscle gain will vary the fat percentage. Therefore I am not too worried about it at this point. Plus I realize that some of that is loose body skin that is sagging / hanging, and won't go away without surgery.

No major problems on the heart monitoring as of yet. I have transmitted data several times, but most of the times I did not have any incident or symptom to report, and it often occurred without me know when or where. Several times were when I was asleep. Two were at some point during the day, but I never heard the signal, but had been in some noisy places each day.

However, upon return from the Seminar Week, I did experience Tuesday morning a problem. About 1am I awoke to my heart beating faster, as though I'd been running a race. I did record the event, as it did not do so automatically. This kept up for an hour, so I recorded the event 3 more times over that hour. While it did slow down after that initial hour, it was still at an elevated rate after that for awhile. In short, I did not get any sleep from 1am to 3am, and not much after that.

This obviously was not enough to cause the PA to call me for any immediate action, so that is the good news. Hopefully he will be able to determine something from that event, and any other transmissions, as to what may be causing these incidents, and if they are correctable, even by minor surgery. I finish up wearing the monitor this coming weekend, and then return it. After that I expect to hear from the cardiologists office to schedule a consultation, at least to explain what they have found, if anything, and what future action they recommend.

Other than that, it's been a great almost 2 weeks since the last report. Las Vegas was a good trip - the seminar was definitely worthwhile. A whole week in one is a bit much, but it was very in depth at times, and more of a skimming of material at times, but overall quite informative and helpful. I'm glad I went.

The second weekend of the trip I went up to South Lake Tahoe for some R & R. I had not been up there in years, so that was a wonderful weekend. They had some snow the week previous, though few signs of it were left in Stateline on the ground. There was still a lot of snow on the mountains, though skiing had closed just the weekend before, as the bottoms of the ski areas were definitely exposing a lot of rock and grass. Still, a great re-visit over all, and well worth it.

I'm posting on a Friday rather than the usual Monday, since I will be out of town for the next 8 days. I will resume Monday postings on May 3rd. That way I will be back to the same scales I've been using, for consistency. Also, it will be after a week at a seminar in Las Vegas, so I'll have to behave while out there ! Although pulling the slot machine handles is exercise, right ??

An unexpected visit to my cardiologist this week did show some good news. In the 2-1/2 months since I'd been in there for my yearly checkup, I'd lost 10 pounds !! Bad news is, I was in there to see why my heart was fluttering the night before. Could be a resurfacing of the bout I had years ago with Atrial Fillibration. The PA has ordered a monitor for me to wear all day everyday, except when showering or swimming. He's thinking I may have more symptoms that I am aware of, such as when I am sleeping. I'll wear this for 2 weeks, and hopefully that will give him the information needed to see what treatment, if any, I will require.

Results are finally showing better ! I've made some changes in my eating, so that has paid off, though I still need to do more along that line. I've also backed off the weight training just a bit. I was doing it almost every day, along with the cardio (usually cardio in the mornings, training in the evenings). I want to focus more on losing weight, than on bulking up. Yes, I want to continue to gain strength and tone up, but I'm not out to be Charles Atlas. My main goal is weight loss, so that eventually I will get back down to low body fat, and have the total body lift, to shed the excess skin from the gastric bypass surgery. I'm still doing weight training, as I know more muscle helps reduce fat, but more muscle also adds weight.

I was at my lowest almost 3 years ago, but kept gaining, up until late last year. Then I just sort of plateaued, and moved up and down within a 5 pound range. Now it's coming back down, and I'm feeling better as well. Some stress (my biggest contributor to my eating) has been removed, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on some other stress points.

I'm using a personal trainer now near work. Well, when he actually meets with me. We were going to meet 3 times this week. We met once. I'm a bit frustrated with that aspect of it, but when I do get to meet with him, he's really quite good for me. He does push me, even though I had to push him a bit to get him to push me. Now he knows that is fair game. He's helped me a lot in talking through my eating patterns, with guidance on what to do, what not to do. I know, I've heard that all before, and sometimes I pay attention to it, sometimes I seem to let it go in one ear and out the other. So, we will see how it pans out this time.

I'm currently using 2 workout facilities. The one near work, and the one up at the lake. When I'm in Crested Butte, I've found a good one there in Gunnison also. Next week I will make use of the hotel facilities in Las Vegas. I'm definitely more comfortable now using the gym than I was previously, and I am utilizing more of the equipment - not just the machines, but also the free weights, and of course the cardio.

Summer is approaching, so I will get in more walks outside. Hopefully some good swimming as well once the lake warms up. Perhaps I'll even finish up that Endless Pool this year, at least that is the plan.

I know it's me that has had to make this happen, and make any changes within, and I know sometimes that takes me awhile to get to that point. But I do want to acknowledge that friends have also been helpful, in just talking things through, or in relating their life experiences, or in giving advice on eating or exercising. It all helps in the big picture, and it is all appreciated.

Wow. I must be eating too many calories. I have busted my butt (who invented that stair master contraption ??), but no real progress seen from last week. I'm floundering in the same general area.

Next week is the seminar in Las Vegas. A good week to cut calories. Not. Actually, it may be best for me to get away from what I am doing, and see how a new routine works for me. I'm taking my whey powder, so that will be a few meals a day.

Not surprised weight increased a bit....... 3 buffets in 10 days, for birthday and Easter, plus some other birthday meals out, etc.

Glad body fat decreased, so maybe there is more muscle.

Working out with Personal Trainer seems good, when we do meet. He canceled this morning and moved it to tomorrow after work. Seems like that is happening a lot with him. I'll give him a bit more time, but then may make a change.

I'm not sure why the percentage of body fat is increasing, when it should be muscle that is increasing. Especially with some weight loss. At least the weight and the BMI are decreasing.

I'm not sure of the accuracy of the scales in measuring body fat or BMI, but will stick with using them, at least for now.

Birthday tomorrow...... will be 56 !!

World's Fattest Woman

I read an article today on a woman striving to become the world's fattest woman.

Why ?

While I was once quite overweight, before my gastric bypass, I never was intent on gaining weight.
It was more of a helpless feeling that I could just gain weight looking at a food advertisement in a magazine. I never fully admitted to myself that I was eating too much, and the wrong foods, in excessive portions, and too late at night.

Gastric Bypass allowed me to lose 250#. Down to less than half the size I was previously.

So why have I put weight back on ?

Unlike this woman seeking to be the fattest, I still want to be sleek and muscular. However, when I got down to 230#, everyone kept commenting that I looked too thin. Too gaunt. Unhealthy. Etc.

While I did not heed all their comments, I did look in the mirror. Naked. That's what bothered me. After losing all the weight in my early 50's, the skin had no where to go but to sag. It was not a pretty sight. To me it was worse than when I was twice as heavy, because at least at that point it was a fuller look, not all droopy.

I did look into the Body Lift, and the Doctors I chose where in the Los Angeles Area. I could not however, justify going out there for 6 - 7 weeks (surgery, recovery, checkups, etc.). Perhaps I should have. I never had the surgery done.

Now, after regaining 70 pounds, I am unhappy with my re-gain. I am striving to lose back to the 250# range, working out in the process. I do cardio and strength training, several times a week.
I belong to a gym near work, and also one up at the lake. I've been using a personal trainer, though he took another regular job, and I've not been able to schedule with him in weeks now.
Tomorrow I interview two potential personal trainers at the gym here near work (Sapulpa area),
and see what they propose.

However, to accomplish anything I want to, I have to get my eating back under control. While I have not returned to the junk food I ate before Gastric Bypass, I am simply eating too much. It's all "healthy" foods, with a few exceptions (some BBQ sauce, etc.), but because I deem them healthy foods (protein bars, NutriSystems, etc.) I eat more than I should most days. My weight has stabilized the last few months, within a 7 pound range. But I know I can do better, I know I can do more. I know I can eat less. I just have to do it.

Stress has been the main problem in recent years. The stress of the company sales plummeting from our best 5 years ever, to a horrible 2009. 2010 is improving so far, but there is no guarantee that will last. Also, the financial stress, as I am one of those that bought property for less than 20% down. Yes, I should have realized that was not the best move. However, the bank that approved those loans should have realized it as well. Now, to meet compliance with their auditors, they have cracked down on me, demanding more principal, and upping one of the payments at refinance time 18 months ago. At that point, they added extra principal as a monthly requirement with my payment, which in fact doubled my monthly payment. Of course, when I approached them last summer for some reprieve, knowing my income was lower, etc.,
they did not offer any assistance or allow me to skip any payments, etc. Anyway, just another source of stress. I have the Sapulpa home on the market (for 8 months now), but no taker. Someday.

As one can tell from some of the above, I keep having excuses for not getting in better shape. Some are valid, some are merely excuses. While I lost a ton of weight, it did not change what was engrained in my brain. All those years of being teased, looked at by strangers, avoiding true intimacy, and ignoring the health risks, were still locked up inside. Therapy has helped with that, but it took me 50 years to get this way, so it's not an easy fix. The recent addition of Wellbutrin has helped to calm my inner rants and raves for the most part, though I still have my moments. Fortunately though, I now think about them more than I act on them. That has helped me with food, and in relationships with friends and family. As a result of the therapy, I have been able to release myself from many of the toxic relationships of the past, when I was just too needy to not have some form of relationship. Today, I have more fulfilling relationships with friends, and find it easier to make new friends as well. One relationship in particular has really been a positive for me, as the input and acceptance I have received are very beneficial. I was never one to see myself as receiving total acceptance from many people in my life, but I've found it now, and it's a beautiful experience.

So how does this all relate to the woman wanting to be the heaviest in the world ? I've been super heavy. There was no happiness there. No matter how many cheeseburgers with fries and a chocolate shake I consumed, that enjoyment was so fleeting. Food is merely a temporary high when using it for acceptance and comfort.

Today I know healthier eating. There is no way I will regain back to where I was 5 years ago. Most of what I have gained back, I will be shedding in 2010. My workouts will reduce my BMI and % of fat along with the pounds. Then I can reconsider doing the Body Lift, even here in Tulsa. That will not be for vanity, but for health, and an improved self-image. I've been overweight since grade school, so I've never known what it's like to be a "normal" size. Even at my recent lowest of 230#, that was still "heavy" by the medical charts, though by my friends accounts, it was too thin. No wonder I was mixed up, receiveing conflicting signals.

My theory is that the lady gaining to be the heaviest is receiving mixed signals. She loves the attention it has brought to her, the fame, the shock value. The fact that she makes a living by
having a website where men can pay to view her, while eating, etc., reflects her need for attention, even when not in a positive fashion.

What message will that send to the kids she is raising ? How will they feel once the burden on her system of the extra weight takes the ultimate toll, and she's no longer around ? How does that help them ? How does that show love for them ?
